BAINBRIDGE ISLAND ON THE WAY TO BECOMING RECOGNIZED AS NATION’S MOST CIVIL & BEST-MANNERED COMMUNITY IN NATION

Civility resolution - YouTube

BITV is incredibly proud of the community it serves, but it wants to be even prouder. We want to be proud of a community that is recognized and praised for being one of the (perhaps the) most civil and best-mannered communities in the nation. To this , it is sponsoring an initiative aimed at helping the community achieve such a istinction. Residents are being asked to pledge to have this worthy and lofty goal become their’s as well. City Administrator Mary Jo Briggs has called BITV “angels” for helping to start this movement. Police Chief Matt Haney calls the BITV Civility Initiative “and excellent one”. Former college professor Rob Jacques not only supports the initiative, but has offered to help BITV provide programming aimed at enhancing people’s ability to present a point of view (argue) in a way that invites civil discourse, favorable outcomes, and friendships.

In addition to programs designed to help the community better understand the underpinnings of civility, BITV also intends to showcase examples of civility at its finest within our community. As of January 1st BITV is requesting all Islander to start using their digital cameras to photograph their friends, neighbors and former enemies displaying random acts of civility. Such pictures can be as simple as patting a favorite pet, flashing a friendly smile, saluting someone or some group demonstrating for what the person or group believes in, or anything else that showcases the community’s best. Pictures will be assembled into a “civility album” at BITV and broadcast regularly on cable channel 12, and soon to be available to be streamed to computers everywhere. Send your pictures to civilitypictures@bitv.org, then watch for them to show up regularly throughout our community.
